ALGEMEEN
Infectie met Entamoeba histolytica kan uiteenlopende intestinale ziektebeelden tot gevolg hebben, soms gepaard gaande met granuloomvorming. Na invasie van de darmwand kan de parasiet ook extra-intestinale ziekte veroorzaken, zoals het leverabces.
BEHANDELING
Bij een symptomatische infectie behandeling altijd direct vervolgen met contactamoebicide behandeling (clioquinol of paromomycine) om intra-luminaal cyste dragerschap te behandelen.
Bij asymptomatisch dragerschap volstaat behandeling met alleen een contactamoebicide middel.
Entamoeba dispar (apathogeen): geen behandeling.
